ON AIR: when the local area becomes an open-air classroom

There are lessons learned at school desks and others that leave a lasting impression because they are experienced firsthand. Guided tours of the local area represented one of the most engaging and significant educational experiences of this year: they allowed students to observe, listen, ask questions, and gather testimonies directly in the places that safeguard the memory, culture, and traditions of a community.

Experiencing history firsthand means transforming knowledge into experience. It means walking paths that tell stories of the past, meeting people who preserve its memory, and discovering how the local area is the result of events, choices, and traditions that continue to live on today. Each educational outing thus became a precious opportunity to develop curiosity, observation skills, and a sense of belonging.

An extraordinary example was the visit to the Bosco delle Querce in Seveso, a symbolic place of environmental rebirth and human ability to restore life to an area marked by one of the most significant ecological emergencies in Italian history. Walking among the trees that now populate this area means concretely understanding the value of environmental protection, collective memory, and the commitment of generations who transformed a wound from the past into a natural heritage for the future. Here, history is not only read in books: it is observed in places and heard through the testimonies of those who lived through the events.

Equally significant was the experience in the Montevecchia and Valle del Curone Park, an area that combines nature, agricultural traditions, and local history. Among hills, woods, farmhouses, and ancient paths, students were able to get a close look at the activities that for centuries characterized the life of the Brianza communities. The testimonies of farmers, guides, and volunteers provided a heritage made of work, passed-down knowledge, and respect for the environment. The discovery of landscapes, crops, and rural architecture allowed for an understanding of how the relationship between man and nature has shaped the territory over time.

The journey continued along the evocative route of the Brianza lakes, a mosaic of natural environments and stories rooted in distant eras. The shores of the lakes hold stories of fishermen, ancient production activities, folk legends, and traditions that have accompanied the life of local communities. Observing these places in person meant capturing details that no photograph can fully convey: the silence of the water, the colors of the landscape, the marks left by time and the interaction between man and nature.

The guided tours took on an even deeper value because they were transformed into opportunities for meeting and dialogue. Listening to those who live in the area, gathering stories, and asking questions allowed students to become active protagonists of discovery. Each voice contributed to building an authentic and shared narrative, capable of connecting the past to the present and passing on the value of memory to new generations.

In an increasingly digital world, direct experience retains an irreplaceable importance. Walking through historical sites, observing natural and cultural heritage up close, meeting people, and listening to stories means learning through emotions and concrete experience. It is a way to understand that history does not only belong to the past, but continues to live on in the landscapes, traditions, and testimonies that each territory safeguards.

For this reason, the guided tours represented much more than a simple school outing: they were a journey into the memory, culture, and identity of a community, an opportunity to form aware, curious citizens who are deeply connected to the heritage surrounding them. Now all that remains is to tell the story… in the podcast!
